The guidelines below are intended to help co-instructors for our Team Taught Sections of 1101 and 1102. This pilot program matches experienced, accomplished instructors with new, incoming teaching assistants.
The lead instructor has final approval of the curriculum and calendar. Ideally, decisions are made collaboratively. The lead and co-instructor must meet once a week to plot how the classes will be taught.
It is imperative that instructor teams treat each other with professional respect, especially when working with students. If instructors are having interpersonal difficulties, they should contact the Director of Composition or the Mentoring Coordinator.
Each instructor should grade the same students throughout the semester; however, collaborative grading may be appropriate in some cases.
Each instructor is responsible for grading the work of half of the students in the combined classes and may divide the class roster equally, as they see fit.
Each instructor is expected to attend all class sessions. Classes can be co-taught or the instructors can take turns leading class discussions.
To facilitate compatible feedback and assessment, before grading major papers, instructors will have a calibration session: they will share grades and comments on four papers. These four papers (two from each instructor’s pile) will be graded independently.
After grading papers individually, prior to returning them, the lead and co-instructor will look over one another’s comments and grades. This review may be cursory, yet at least two papers from each instructor's roster will be carefully reviewed by each instructor.
Each team must return papers at the same time. Papers must be returned within two weeks of receipt, although one week is preferred.
All instructor teams will meet as a group in the 2nd week, the week before the drop deadline, and the week before final exams. (The purpose of these meetings will be to brainstorm about best practices and overcome obstacles. Each meeting will begin with a holistic grading/calibration session for the large group.)
All team-teachers will meet at least once each semester with the Director of Composition or mentoring coordinator.
These training workshops are required for anyone who wants to teach 1101 or 1102 at USF

Below is my summary of the program, standardization, and teaching goals that guide the design and development of our program. I base these suggestions and points of reference in response to teacher and student feedback; on research and theory in English Studies; on responses to our online teacher evaluation form; and on the extensive evaluation of our program conducted by the USF Office of Assessment.
