Abstract Writing Activity

In 1102, students must prepare an abstract to hand in with each project. Many freshman are unfamiliar with the function of abstracts. The following exercise has helped my students grasp the purpose of abstracts and successfully write their own.

For an in-class writing assignment I showed a clip from the Colbert Report

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_6V95YBthk and had the students respond by identifying his claims. After discussing his claims, they are to argue if he is successful or not.--MarieHendry

For in an in-class activity I had them answer questions about their paper to go over during the conference (to help get their minds working on ideas). They were:

1.) What was the most effective part of your paper? Why?

2.) What was the least effective part of your paper? Why?

3.) How long did you spend on the paper, including research and revision?

4.) How effective was the peer response? What did you change in your paper based on the peer response?

5.) Was there anything experimental about your paper? What would you do differently? What will you do differently for the next paper?

6.) What grade would you give yourself? Defend it. --MarieHendry
